17 Things Every College Girl Should Have in Her Backpack

College life is busy.

Between classes, group work, part-time jobs, and everything in between, I’ve learned the hard way that being prepared makes a big difference.

I used to toss random things into my bag and hope for the best.

But after a few too many headaches—literally and figuratively—I started keeping a few must-haves with me at all times.

Whether you’re a freshman still figuring things out or a senior ready to graduate, these are the 17 things every college girl should keep in her backpack.

17 Things Every College Girl Should Have in Her Backpack

1. Laptop + Charger

Your laptop is your lifeline.

I always bring mine everywhere, along with the charger, even if I don’t think I’ll need it.

Professors sometimes throw in last-minute research sessions or online assignments.

2. Headphones or Earbuds

Whether it’s for a study playlist, a Zoom meeting, or just tuning out hallway noise, headphones are a must.

I keep mine in a small case so they don’t get tangled.

3. Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is key when you're on campus all day.

A leak-proof water bottle saves money and keeps you energized.

I refill mine between classes.

4. Snacks

I always keep something small like a granola bar, trail mix, or crackers.

You don’t want to sit through a two-hour lecture with a growling stomach.

5. Notebooks + Pens

Even though I take most notes on my laptop, I always carry a small notebook for quick thoughts or classes that don’t allow electronics.

A few black and blue pens are enough.

6. Highlighters

When I print out study material or notes, I like to highlight key points.

I usually bring two—yellow and pink.

7. Planner or Calendar

A physical planner helps me stay on top of classes, deadlines, and to-dos.

I like crossing things off.

It feels productive.

8. Hand Sanitizer

Campuses can get gross—especially shared desks and doorknobs.

A small bottle of hand sanitizer keeps germs in check.

9. Tissues or Wipes

Spills, runny noses, dusty seats… tissues or baby wipes come in handy more often than I’d like to admit.

10. Mini Makeup or Hygiene Bag

I keep lip balm, a small mirror, deodorant, pads, a comb, and blotting paper in a zip pouch.

It’s great for quick touch-ups between classes.

11. Portable Charger (Power Bank)

You never know when your phone will die, especially on long days.

I keep a small power bank and cord in my backpack just in case.

12. Extra Hair Tie or Clip

If you have long hair, this one’s essential.

I always carry an extra scrunchie—especially for labs or windy days.

13. Sunglasses

For walking across campus when it’s sunny, I throw on a pair of sunglasses and avoid the squinting.

14. Umbrella

A foldable umbrella has saved me more times than I can count.

Getting caught in the rain without one is the worst.

15. ID + Campus Card

Your student ID might also be your key to the library, cafeteria, and printers.

I keep mine in a wallet that clips into an inside pocket.

16. Flash Drive

Even though everything’s in the cloud, a flash drive can still be useful—especially during group presentations or shared computers.

17. Pain Reliever or Meds

Cramps, headaches, and allergies don’t care if you have class.

I keep a few Advil and any personal meds in a labeled pill box.

Conclusion

Your college backpack is more than just a bag—it’s your survival kit.

When you’ve got the right things packed, your day runs smoother and you avoid unnecessary stress.

Over time, you’ll figure out what works best for you, but these 17 essentials are a solid starting point.

Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later when you’re the only one in class who remembered the snacks—or the umbrella.
