Getting one person to decide on a Halloween costume is difficult.
Now try getting five people to agree.
Good luck.
Someone wants cute.
Someone wants scary.
One friend doesn't want to buy anything.
And there is always that person who says “anything is fine” then rejects every single idea.
So I tried to keep this list VERY mixed.
Some of these group Halloween costumes are easy, others are ridiculous and a few require the whole group to actually commit.
But if everyone cooperates for once, the pictures will be worth it.
20 Group Halloween Costume Ideas Your Friends Will Actually Agree On
1. Scooby-Doo mystery gang

Scooby-Doo is honestly one of the safest group costume ideas because everybody gets a different outfit.
Nobody has to match exactly.
Velma gets orange, Daphne gets purple, Fred has his ascot and Shaggy barely has to dress up at all.
And somebody gets to be Scooby.
Fight amongst yourselves.
2. Stranger Things squad
Pick your Stranger Things characters and build each outfit separately.
The costumes will still make sense together without everyone looking identical.
3. Playing card t-shirts
Perfect.
Assign hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades.
Use white clothes as the base and add the symbols somewhere obvious.
Simple, coordinated and you can probably DIY most of it.
4. Wizard of Oz crew

Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion will probably always work as a group Halloween costume.
And if your group is bigger, start adding more Oz characters.
5. Spice Girls
Sporty doesn't need to dress like Posh.
Scary doesn't need to dress like Baby.
You get the idea.
Huge platforms, 90s clothes and slightly questionable fashion decisions are very welcome here.
6. Clueless
Plaid.
And maybe some more plaid.
Get the blazers, mini skirts and knee-high socks involved and your group will look like it escaped a 90s high school movie.
7. Mario Kart
Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser are the obvious starting point.
Then start adding whichever characters your bigger group wants.
I would definitely make little steering wheels or cardboard racing props for the pictures.
Someone also needs to dramatically pretend to throw a banana peel.
Obviously.
8. Tarot cards
Instead of everyone dressing as the exact same theme, assign each person a different tarot card.
The Moon, The Star and The Tower alone already give you so much to work with.
Keep some colors or makeup details similar so the whole group still looks connected.
9. Grease Pink Ladies and T-Birds
Pink satin jackets for the Pink Ladies and black leather for the T-Birds.
Easy.
10. Mean Girls Plastics

On Wednesdays we wear pink.
On Halloween apparently we also carry a Burn Book around.
You don't even need exact movie costumes if everyone dresses in very obvious pink early-2000s outfits.
11. Office Space coworkers
Get everybody into painfully boring 90s office clothes.
Khakis, ties, suspenders, all of it.
Then bring a fake or lightweight printer prop into the situation and suddenly the joke makes sense.
It is definitely better if everyone in your group actually knows the movie though.
Otherwise you're just a group of people dressed for a bad office meeting.
12. Circus sideshow
You can have a ringmaster, clown, acrobat and other old-school sideshow-inspired characters.
Nobody needs to wear the same thing.
The dark circus styling will connect everything together.
13. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
You know what to do.
Green outfits with different colored masks make this one almost too easy.
Blue, red, orange and purple.
Just make sure everybody agrees on their turtle before somebody starts arguing about being Michelangelo.
14. Skeleton wedding party

Imagine a full wedding party except everybody is dead.
I mean...very Halloween.
You can have the skeleton bride and groom in the center with undead bridesmaids and groomsmen around them.
Black, white and grey outfits will keep everything looking coordinated.
Then go crazy with the skull makeup.
The group photos could be ridiculously good.
15. Disney villains
Maleficent, Ursula, Cruella and the Evil Queen are already a very strong group.
And there are plenty more if you need to expand the squad.
16. Wes Anderson characters
Pick characters or create outfits inspired by that super recognizable Wes Anderson color palette.
Pastels, vintage pieces and weird little props will help.
Everyone should also practice looking directly at the camera with absolutely no expression.
That's half the costume.
17. Pandemic board game scientists
Then add biohazard symbols, goggles and science props inspired by the game.
It's nerdy, which I mean as a compliment.
18. Fruit salad

Sometimes stupid costumes are the funniest costumes.
Get one banana.
One strawberry.
One pineapple.
One bunch of grapes.
Congratulations, you're a fruit salad now.
19. Reservoir Dogs
Add skinny ties and sunglasses.
This one looks especially good if your group wants something coordinated without wearing an obvious costume costume.
20. Renaissance painting characters
Everyone dresses like they walked straight out of an old Renaissance painting.
Huge sleeves.
Ruffled collars.
Dramatic dresses.
And the most serious facial expressions imaginable.
Walk around the party looking mildly disappointed by modern society and I think you've nailed it.
Conclusion
Group Halloween costumes are always amazing in theory.
The difficult part is getting the group chat to actually make a decision.
So send everybody this list and demand answers immediately.
For something easy, I'd go with playing cards, Grease or Reservoir Dogs.
If your friends are willing to put in effort, the tarot card group and skeleton wedding party could look INSANE.
And if nobody can agree on anything?
Dress as fruit.
There are enough fruits for everyone and nobody gets to complain.
Whatever your group chooses, coordinate enough that people understand the theme but don't worry about every tiny thing matching.
A little chaos makes the group pictures better anyway.
