20 Halloween Costume Ideas For Men That Actually Look Good

20 Halloween Costume Ideas For Men That Actually Look Good

I feel like men's Halloween costumes usually go in one of two directions.

Either ridiculously simple or SO complicated that you're wearing six layers, a mask and something you cannot sit down in.

There has to be something in the middle.

You can absolutely wear a proper Halloween costume without looking like you grabbed the first plastic Dracula cape you found ten minutes before the party.

Although Dracula is actually on this list.

Just a much better version.

From creepy classics to pirates, cyberpunk looks and a random disco king moment, these Halloween costume ideas for men have a little bit of everything.

20 Halloween Costume Ideas For Men That Actually Look Good

1. Modern Dracula

@nolanmartin

Starting with a classic because Dracula will probably never stop being a good Halloween costume.

A long black cape with red lining makes it instantly recognizable.

Keep the outfit underneath dark, add pale makeup and you're ready.

2. Retro astronaut

@spragueamy

A silver vintage-style astronaut suit looks way cooler than the basic white version if you ask me.

Plus, the helmet pretty much completes the whole costume by itself.

3. Día de los Muertos-inspired groom

@chacarron

A black suit with marigold details and intricate skull-inspired face art can create a really striking look.

This isn't just random Halloween imagery though.

Día de los Muertos has important Mexican cultural traditions behind it, so definitely understand what you're recreating and approach the look respectfully.

4. Victorian vampire hunter

@somcagmattmert
Now THIS is how you wear a Halloween costume and still look dressed up.

Get a Victorian-style waistcoat, top hat and dark trousers.

A wooden stake prop makes the vampire hunter part pretty obvious.

You can also add an old pocket watch or gloves if the outfit needs something more.

5. Cyberpunk hacker

@дмитрий

If you don't want anything traditionally spooky, go futuristic.

Black clothes and glowing LED details look ridiculously good at night.

6. Werewolf

@bradleyvictoria

A werewolf costume is allowed to look messy, which automatically makes it easier.

Tear up an old flannel shirt.

Add fur and werewolf makeup.

And please mess up the hair because a perfectly styled werewolf makes absolutely no sense.

7. Old Hollywood Frankenstein

@schoppermorrisjenn

Frankenstein but make him slightly sophisticated.

The flat-top hair and bolt-neck makeup keep the monster part obvious while a grey suit gives the whole thing an old horror movie feel.

8. Black Panther

@alfatihroyan

Some costumes need explaining.

Black Panther does not.

A detailed Black Panther suit is basically enough, especially if you don't feel like spending forever putting together separate pieces.

9. Plague doctor

@ghostcrow

There is something genuinely unsettling about the plague doctor mask.

Add a long black coat and gloves and suddenly you're the person nobody wants silently standing behind them at the Halloween party.

Which means the costume is working.

10. Mad scientist

@insiderlyfe

This is your excuse to make your hair look completely insane.

Throw on a white lab coat and goggles.

Carry around some brightly colored fake experiment bottles.

You can splatter the coat with weird colors too.

The entire costume should look like something definitely went wrong in the laboratory five minutes ago.

11. Pirate captain

@rumila

I don't think pirate costumes are going anywhere anytime soon.

And why should they?

A weathered captain coat, boots and tricorn hat still look really good together.

Add a few rings or a fake treasure map and call it a day.

12. Pennywise

@olla

If the goal is to actually scare somebody, Pennywise is sitting right there.

The clown makeup and red balloon are enough to make this one creepy before you even say anything.

13. Secret agent

@dave

This is probably one of the easiest costumes for men who don't really enjoy costumes.

Wear black.

Add an earpiece and dark sunglasses.

Look unnecessarily serious all night.

Done.

14. Egyptian pharaoh

@rori

Gold is doing all the work here and I am not mad about it.

The striped headdress is probably the most important piece, then you can build the rest of the outfit around black and metallic gold.

15. Grim Reaper

@verbenasdreamstudio

Want maximum Halloween with minimum color?

Grim Reaper.

A long black hooded robe already gets you most of the way there.

Add the scythe prop and you are officially creepy.

I also love that you really don't need much makeup if the hood covers most of your face.

16. 70s disco king

@hernandezlissette

Finally, somebody who isn't covered in fake blood.

A white 70s-style suit, open collar and platform shoes turn this into a whole Saturday Night Fever situation.

You better actually dance if you're wearing it though.

17. Zombie surgeon

Green scrubs are harmless until you cover them in fake blood.

Add zombie makeup and suddenly we have an operating room disaster on our hands.

18. Viking warrior

@mcgittigancarrie

Fur, armor and a huge costume axe?

Go for it.

The costume-style horned helmet makes the look easy to recognize, and messy hair helps everything feel more rugged.

This is definitely one of the less subtle options on this list.

19. Masquerade phantom

@michalkcarlene

A black tuxedo with an ornate white mask is simple but SO good.

You could make it more mysterious with a long black cape too.

20. Scarecrow

@danieltaylor

Ending with something you can actually put together without hunting through twelve costume shops.

Old clothes, burlap patches, straw details and a weathered hat will do it.

Add stitched scarecrow makeup around the mouth if you want it creepier.

You could even make this one entirely from clothes you already own.

Cheap and very Halloween appropriate.

I approve.

Conclusion

So apparently men's Halloween costumes don't have to be boring after all.

Who knew?

You can keep things classic with Dracula and Frankenstein, go properly creepy with Pennywise or the plague doctor, or completely ignore the spooky theme and turn up dressed for a 70s disco.

Personally, I think the Victorian vampire hunter deserves more attention.

It looks like you actually made an effort without having to paint your entire face green.

Whatever you choose, commit to it.

Nothing ruins a good Halloween costume faster than looking embarrassed to be wearing it.

Get dressed, take the pictures and enjoy the one night nobody is going to question why you are carrying a scythe around.
